The PAGE Family

ALBERT JAMES PAGE was born circa 1841 in Ore, Sussex (source : 1841, 1851, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census). On the 1841 census, age 10 months, he was living in Standens Road, Ore, Hastings, Sussex, with his parents. On the 1851 census, age 10, a scholar, he was living in Ore Down, Hastings, with his parents.

On the 1871 census, Albert (30, brickmaker, born Hastings Sussex) is listed with his wife ANNIE ? (35, born E Minser Dorset) and their four children, in Middle Road, Ore, Sussex, just a couple of doors along from Albert's parents and siblings. Annie must have died before 1881, because Albert has a new wife by then.

He remarried HARRIET HIGGS HAYWARD in October quarter 1874 in Hastings (source : Free BMD, district Hastings, volume 2b). His name was recorded as JAMES ALBERT PAGE in the register. She was born circa 1842 in London (in Westminster according to the 1881 census, in Kennington according to the 1891 census).

On the 1881 census, his name is given as ALBERT JAMES PAGE and he is a 40-year-old general labourer living at 25 Brewery Cottages, Roebuck Yard, St Clements, Hastings. On the 1891 census, he gives his name as JAMES PAGE (which is how family members knew him), he is still a general labourer and is now aged 51, living at 111 Athelstone Road, All Saints, Hastings (presumably Athelstan Road) with his wife, two nursechildren (carrying the surname ALLEN – the maiden name of his daughter-in-law) and two lodgers, father and son both called HORACE PRIOR (source : 1891 census) . On the 1901 census, he is down to renting (presumably) two rooms at 46 North Lane, St Clement (Halton parish), Hastings with his wife, a house shared by the COLEMAN family (a 22-year-old plasterer, his wife and 1-year-old son). He is a 60-year-old navvy (source : 1901 census).

A 72-year-old Albert J PAGE died in September quarter 1912 in Hastings, which could be him (source : Free BMD, district Hastings, volume 2b, page 19).
