The BOURNE Family


AMOS BOURNE was born circa 1838 in Bodiam, Sussex (source : 1861, 1881 & 1881 censuses) or Shadoxhurst, Kent (source : 1891 census) and baptised on 19th February 1837 in Bodiam, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.:J147971 Dates: 1557 - 1881 Source Call No.:1067121 Type: Film Printout Call No.:NONE Type: Sheet: 00 ). In 1860 he was a butcher (source : wedding entry), in 1871 a fruiterer and in 1881 a greengrocer.

On the 1841 census, 4-year-old Amos is with his family at Bodiam. On the 1851 census, 14-year-old ag lab Amos is with his family at Hellingly, Sussex.

He married MARGARET BERRY on 1st July 1860 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex (source : PAR 255/1/3/33, page 32, entry 64). She was born circa 1836 in Kilkenny, Ireland (source : 1861 & 1881 censuses). At the time of the wedding, Amos Bourne, 23, was a Bachelor, Butcher, of 101 St. James St, son of Henry Bourne, Farmer, and Margaret Berry, 22,was a Spinster, -, of 5 Belgrave Place, daughter of Michael Berry, Accountant (source : PAR 255/1/3/33, page 32, entry 64). They both signed their names (source : PAR 255/1/3/33, page 32, entry 64). The witnesses were George Cruse & Mary Ann Hand(?) who both signed, and they were married by C E Douglass, Curate (source : PAR 255/1/3/33, page 32, entry 64).

On the 1861, Amos, 24, married, greengrocer, is in Brighthelm/Brighton, Sussex (municipal ward - pier) with wife Margaret (22, born Wicklow Ireland) - the address is hard to read but looks like S1 1/2 St Samuel St (?). On the 1871 census, Amos (33, married, fruiterer) is now at 81 St James' Street, Brighton, with wife Margaret (31, born Athlowe Ireland) and their four children.

On the 1881 census, Amos (a 44-year-old greengrocer), his Irish wife Margaret (45) and their three teenage daughters were at 81 82 St James St in Brighton, Sussex. There is a death registered in September quarter 1881 for a MARGARET BOURNE, aged 42, in Brighton, Sussex, which may be her (source : Free BMD, district Brighton, volume 2b, page 101 ).

Amos married MARIA ? some time between 1881 and 1891. She was born circa 1834 in Middlesex (source : 1901 census). There is a marriage registered for AMOS BOURNE and possibly MARIA HUTCHISON in July quarter 1886 in Chorlton, Lancashire (source : Free BMD, district Chorlton, volume 8c, page 1050).

On the 1891 census, Amos, (54, married, Fruit & Potato Merchnt (Em'er), born Kent - Shaddocks Hurst ) was at 83 St James St, Brighton, with his daughter Edith. On the 1901 census, a 64-year-old Amos (born Sussex, no occupation) shows up with wife MARIA at 4 The Pavement, St Hilda, in Lewisham, London. There is a death registered in December quarter 1903 for a 66-year-old AMOS BOURNE, which is presumably him (source : Free BMD, district Eastbourne volume 2b page 43 ).

The Children of AMOS BOURNE and MARGARET BERRY:

  1. AUSTIN BOURNE was born circa 1864 in Brighton, Sussex (source : 1871 census). On the 1871 census, a 7-year-old scholar, he was at the family home in Brighton with his parents and siblings.

  2. CLARA BOURNE was born circa 1865 in Brighton, Sussex (source : 1871 & 1881 censuses). There is a birth registered for CLARA MARY BOURNE in June quarter 1864 which may be her (source : Free BMD, district Brighton, volume 2b, page 175 ). On the 1871 census, a 6-year-old scholar, she was at the family home in Brighton with her parents and siblings. On the 1881 census, age 16, she was an unmarried book keeper clerk, living with her parents and family at 81 82 St James St in Brighton, Sussex. There is also a marriage listed for CLARA MARY BOURNE (to either JOSEPH GUY or THOMAS POINTING) in June quarter 1886 (source : Free BMD, district Brighton, volume 2b, page 396 ). Thomas POINTING was born circa November 1858 in Brighton, Sussex (source : Peter Lowe). On the 1891 census, they were at 36 St James St, Brighton, Sussex (source : Peter Lowe). The 1901 census reveals a CLARA POINTING of the correct age/birthplace but not a CLARA GUY - she is in Brighton with husband THOMAS POINTING (42-year-old dairyman shopkeeper, born Brighton) and an 11-year-old daughter CLARA POINTING (born Brighton, Sussex) (source : index, household still needs to be looked up). There was also another daughter, FLORENCE POINTING, born circa 1879 in Brighton, Sussex (source : Peter Lowe). Thomas died on 28th October 1917, in Steyning Reg District (source : Peter Lowe). Clara died on 1st November 1933, and her death was recorded in Lewes reg district (source : Peter Lowe). Her address in 1933 was 48 Princes Edwards Road, Lewes, Sussex (source : Peter Lowe).

  3. IGNATUS BOURNE was born circa 1867 in Brighton, Sussex (source : 1871 census). On the 1871 census, a 4-year-old scholar, he was at the family home in Brighton with his parents and siblings.

  4. WILLIAM H BOURNE was born circa 1869 in Brighton, Sussex (source : 1871 census). On the 1871 census, aged 2, he was at the family home in Brighton with his parents and siblings.

  5. MARGARET BOURNE was born circa 1873 in Brighton, Sussex (source : 1881 census). On the 1881 census, age 8, she was a scholar, living with her parents and family in Brighton, Sussex.

  6. EDITH BOURNE was born circa 1875 in Brighton, Sussex (source : 1881 census). On the 1881 census, age 6, she was a scholar, living with her parents and family in Brighton, Sussex. On the 1891 census, Edith, (16, unmarried, bookkeeper (Em'ee), born Sussex - Brighton ) was at 83 St James St, Brighton, with her father. There is a marriage listed for EDITH JULIA BOURNE in Brighton in December quarter 1897, to either FRANK ERNEST HOLFORD or EDGAR EMILE B SMITH, but this is not her, (source : Free BMD, district Brighton, volume 2b, page 496 and baptism on IGI with father's name George).
