The TODMAN Family

GEORGE TODMAN was born circa 1815 in Croydon, Surrey (source : 1861 census).

He married ELIZABETH ? (source : 1871 and 1881 censuses), probably before 1849, judging by the birthdates of his children. She was born circa 1815 in Cuckfield, Sussex (source : 1861 & 1871 census).

On the 1861 census, George, a 44-year-old house painter, wife Elizabeth, aged 45, and their five children are at 11 Tamworth Place, Croydon.

Judging by this address, he is presumably related to the WILLIAM TODMAN, coach and cart wheelwright, listed in the Croydon 1851 Directory, who lived in Tamworth Road.

George died before 1871, because Elizabeth is listed at a widow on the census. She shows up at 11 Tamworth Place, Croydon, Surrey (56, widow, laundress) with her three children and a visitor on the 1871 census.

On the 1881 census, Elizabeth, aged 65, shows up as a widowed mother-in-law, with her daughter Elizabeth and her family at 13 Gloucester Road, Croydon, Surrey. Her son William was living just a few doors along at number 10.

On the 1891 census, Elizabeth, aged 76, shows up again as a widowed mother-in-law, with her daughter Ann and her family at 34 Limes Road, Croydon, Surrey.

Elizabeth must have died between 1891 and 1901 since she no longer shows up on the 1901 census.
