(parish clerk), both signed. JOHN HOBDEN was the son of RICHARD HOBDEN and LYDIA CARTER and was born
circa 1810 in Dallington, Sussex (source : 1851 census). His older sister, MARY HOBDEN, had married GEORGE SANDS,
son of JOHN and LUCY SANDS nee HAISELDEN, one month before on 21st January 1838, also at Ashburnham, Sussex
(source : Joanne Mays Becker). Both of these marriages were registered in March quarter 1838 (source :
Free BMD, district Battle, volume 7, page 239 ).
On the 1851 census, John (41 ag lab), his wife Harriett (32), John (12 scholar),
Ann (6 at home), Ellen (5 scholar) and, Charlotte (2) are at Sand Hill Lane. The other children are not mentioned
– there are two possibles (James 11 and William 6, born Warbleton) at Hailsham Union Workhouse,
but they are listed as inmates’ sons (source : 1851 census).
John died on 17th June 1879 in Ashburnham, Sussex

On the 1881 census, Harriet, a 62-year-old widow, is at Mag's Hole, Ashburnham, Sussex with her son, George, and her daughter,

SARAH HOBDEN (6, born Penhurst Sussex) are
all listed at Furnace, Penhurst, Sussex.
John died in 1883 in Warbleton, Sussex and was buried, aged 45, on 24th October 1883 in Ashburnham, Sussex

ANN HOBDEN was born circa 1841 in
Warbleton, Sussex (source : Mary Bethell). She was christened on 25th September 1842 in Warbleton, Sussex.
She died, age 13, in 1856 and
was buried on 13th January 1856 in Ashburnham, Sussex (source : Mary Bethell).
WILLIAM HOBDEN was born 31st January 1844
in Warbleton, Sussex (source : Joanne Mays Becker). There is a birth registered for William Hobden in
March quarter 1844 (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 7, page 392 ). He
married ELLEN (HILDER?) before 1881 (source : 1881 census).
