HENRY BARDEN was born, out of wedlock, on 22nd January 1797
in Ashburnham, Sussex, in the house of Judah Stonestreet (source : Joanne Mays Becker).
He married LUCY HOBDEN on 10th December 1817 in Penhurst, Sussex
(source : Caroline Lancaster). The witnesses were John Sands (= Henry’s father)and Lydia Hobden
(source : Penhurst Parish register PAR 441/1/1/3/1/2/6). He was literate because he signed his name at his marriage
(source : Joanne Mays Becker). Lucy was born circa 1792 (source : 1841 census). She was possibly the daughter of RICHARD and ELIZABETH HOBDEN of Penhurst
(source : Caroline Lancaster). She was illiterate as she made her mark at her marriage
(source : Joanne Mays Becker).
Henry was foreman at the new brickyard at Court Lodge, ¼ mile from the old brickyard
run by John Sands (his father) and then Silas Sands (his half-brother), from 1839
(source : “Brickmaking in Sussex, A History and Gazetteer”).
Lucy died in 1847 and was buried in Ashburnham churchyard (southwest corner). Her tombstone reads
: “In memory of LUCY, wife of HENRY BARDEN of this parish, who died October 21st 1847, aged 57”
(source : Joanne Mays Becker).
On the 1851 census, Henry, aged 53, a brickmaker, a widower and deaf, is living with his son James and his family
at the Furnace in Dallington.
The Children of HENRY BARDEN and LUCY HOBDEN:
JAMES BARDEN , Harriot’s twin, was born circa
1819 in Penhurst (source : 1841 census). He married SARAH HOBDAY
on 13th January 1843 in Dallington, Sussex
(source :
IGI and Free BMD September quarter 1848 district Battle volume 2b page 372). She was born circa 1822
in Dallington (source : 1851 census). They had a daughter HARRIETT BARDEN
, born circa 1845 in
Ashburnham, a daughter LUCY BARDEN, born circa 1847
in Dallington and a son HENRY BARDEN, born circa 1850
in Dallington (source : 1851 census). In 1851, they were living with James’s father, Henry Barden,
at the Furnace in Dallington (source : 1851 census). JAMES took over from his father HENRY BARDEN
as foreman at the brickyard at Court Lodge, and this family tradition continued with HARRY BARDEN (his son)
and finally GEORGE BARDEN (his grandson) who retired in 1955 (source : “Brickmaking in Sussex, A History and Gazetteer”).
On the 1881 census, James (63, brickmaker), his wife Sarah (59) and their younger children
ANN BARDEN
(24, born circa 1857 Dallington), HARACE BARDEN (19 Brickmaker,

and SETH BARDEN (14, born circa 1867 Dallington – married in June quarter 1895,
possibly to EMILY ANN HUTCHINSON, source : Free BMD : district Battle, volume 2b page 109) were at Ashburnham Mouldens (census place : Dallington, Sussex).
HARRIOT BARDEN , James’s twin, was born circa 1819 in Penhurst
(source : 1841 census).
WILLIAM BARDEN , Joseph’s twin, was born circa 1822
in Ashburnham (source : 1851 census). He married DELIA (DEALY) ROBERTS
on 7th September 1848 in Battle, Sussex (source : IGI,
Film Number: 538561). DELIA ROBERTS was born circa 1820 in Dallington (source : 1851 census and IGI,
Film Number: 538561 ) to parents STEPHEN ROBERTS (1782 - 1859 Dallington, married 9th April 1804 Dallington)
and SARAH MILLS (1780 - 1855 Dallington) (source : IGI, Film Number: 538561). In 1851,
they were living at “Backyard Cottage at the Forge in Ashburnham” (source : Ashburnham Tenancy Agreements
2245 15.11.1851). On the 1851 census, WILLIAM BARDEN (29, Lab, Ashburnham) and his wife DEALY (31, Dallington)
are lodgers at Court Lodge, Ashburnham with Richard Howe (30, Lab, Ashburnham) his wife Elizabeth (26 Ashburnham)
and their family. From 1861 to 1869, a William Barden was the brickmaker at the Waldron Brickworks,
located on Easons Farm, Sharps Corner (source : “Brickmaking in Sussex, A History and Gazetteer”, Mollie Beswick).
The Brickworks was in operation from 1861 and closed circa 1914. It was owned by the Fuller estate and was operated
by John Benge (1869-1882), then W&T Barden (1886) and John Benge again (1890 to 1899).
"William Barden, who was born in Waldron, was a brickmaker in 1881 in the Hamsell area of Withyam” (source :
Mrs P.M. Dyson, great grand-daughter courtesy of Joanne Mays Becker), so this is probably the same person.
On the 1881 census, William, a 59 year old brickmaker, is alone at Furnace Cottage,
Ashburnham so Dealy appears to have died before 1881.
JOSEPH BARDEN , William’s twin, was born circa
1822 in Ashburnham (source : 1841 census).
ALFRED BARDEN was born circa 1828 in Ashburnham,
Sussex (source : 1851 census) and died after 1881 (source : Joanne Mays Becker). He married
CHARLOTTE ?.
She was born circa 1823 in Battle, Sussex (source : 1881 census). On the 1851 census, ALFRED BARDEN
was a lodger (23, U, lab, Ashburnham) at Old Swan with William Ticehurst (32, lab, Ashburnham) and
his family. On the 1881 census, Alfred (53, brickmaker) and his wife Charlotte (58), her sons

HOBDAY (28, ag lab), CHARLES HOBDAY (26 ag lab),
HENRY HOBDAY (21 ag lab)
and their son
JOSEPH BARDON (19 ag lab – born circa 1861, Ashburnham,
