HENRY BOURNE
was born circa 1771 and was baptised, to parents THOMAS and ANN BOURNE, on 19th October 1771
in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Hellingly Baptisms, transcript 1753-1812).
He married SARAH DUNK on 2nd May 1798 in
Brightling, Sussex

At the time of the wedding, they were both of Hellingly, Sussex,
and they both signed their names (source : Mandy Willard).
The witnesses were RICHARD ? and JOHN GARIT (source : Mandy Willard).
SARAH DUNK was born circa 1777 (source : Mandy Willard).
At the end of the summer of 1801, both of Henry's parents passed away, within weeks of each other, and
when his father's will was proved in November, Henry inherited his share of the family estate,
to a value of around £500 (source : Thomas's will, courtesy of Mandy Willard -

This is presumably the "Henry Bourne of Brightling, yeoman " who was mentioned in an assignment
dated 31st March 1810 drawn up by " John Bourne of Brightling, yeoman, (his brother???)" , with
"Thomas Freeman of the same place, yeoman, as a party of the 3rd part - for 70 - of a
cottage and piece of waste ground belonging, being part of the ground and premises comprised
in a Lease from Thomas, Lord Pelham, of 22 Mar., 1797. of 2 cottages and 4 acres of waste ground
on Brightling Down, near the windmill there. Signatures, Jno. Bourne, Thos. Freeman, and seals. Witnesses:-
Willm. Thorpe, Steph. Tutt" (source : a2a website, file : SAS-RF/10/137 ). On 8th November 1824, John Fuller
paid 120 to Henry Bourne for the aforementioned cottage - source : a2a website, ref. SAS-RF/10/137 .
Since DUNK was his wife's maiden name, Henry is presumably the "Henry Bourne of Dallington, yeoman "
who was involved in "the sale of lands at or near Carretts Green in Dallington containing 40 acres
devised by the Will of William Dunk formerly of Dallington, and as to the division of the proceeds"
on 27th February 1823 (source : A2A website, FILE - Agreement - ref. SAS-RF/10/127 ). Subsequently,
a "Survey and Valuation ... Of copyhold land and buildings, likewise timber and saplings at Carretts
Green in Dallington from Henry Bourne and others to John Fuller, esq. 660" was carried out on
19th May 1828 (source : A2A website, FILE - ref. SAS-RF/10/132 ). This property appears to have been
sold a month later, according to the "Deed of covenants - By Henry Bourne and others with John Fuller, esq.,
on sale of copyhold property in Dallington" (source : A2A website, FILE - ref. SAS-RF/10/134 ).
The will of William DUNK of Dallington, gent , dated 25th July 1809, had originally attributed
"to Henry Bourne of Brightling, yeoman, of a messuage farm and lands at Carretts Green in Dallington,
containing 40 acres charged with the payment of 200 apiece to Elizabeth the wife of James
Vigor of Alfriston, butcher, and Ann the wife of Thos. Waters of Dallington, yeoman" (source : A2A website,
SAS-RF/14/24 ), but, on 27th February 1823, it was agreed by the three parties involved
that the property should be sold, "by reason
of the inadequency of the value of the estate to meet expenses of the Admission and the payments charged thereon"
(source : A2A website, SAS-RF/14/25 ).
Henry was nominated joint executor of his uncle Henry's
1825 will (source : Mandy Willard).
Sarah died in 1847 and was buried, age 70, on 21st April
1847 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : burial register, courtesy of David Packham).
