The BOURNE Family


JAMES BOURNE was born in March 1796 (source : age on baptism register). He was christened, aged 4 months, to parents WILLIAM and GRACE BOURNE, on 3rd July 1796 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Hellingly Baptisms, transcript 1753-1812). He was a farmer (source : Mandy Willard).

He married widow RUTH BONIFACE nee DALLAWAY/DALLOWAY before 1826 (source : removal notice and Mandy Willard). She was born on 15th May 1790 and baptised on 4th July 1790 in Heathfield (Independent-nc), Sussex and was the daughter of THOMAS DALLAWAY and MARY ? (source : IGI, Batch No.:C042191 Dates:1775 - 1837 Source Call No.:1825420 Type:Film Printout Call No.: 0933405 Type: Film Sheet: 00 ). She had previously married BENJAMIN BONIFACE , a miller of Chiddingly, on 20th August 1817 in Warbleton, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.:M042842 Dates:1813 - 1837 Source Call No.:1468993 IT 1 Type:Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: ). She had (at least) three children by her first husband (source : removal notice).

James was left Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings in his uncle Henry's 1825 will (source : Henry Bourne's 1825 will). In 1826, he and his family were removed from the parish for some reason (source : removal notice from the ESRO A2A website) :

On his daughter Martha's wedding certificate in 1845, James' occupation is given as farmer. James Bourne appears in the 1851 Census at 'Gormans' as a farmer of 65 Acres employing one lad (source : David Packham).

Ruth was buried on 23rd August 1855 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Mandy Willard). Her age was given in the burials register as 65 years (source : David Packham). James was buried on 22nd May 1865 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Mandy Willard). His age was given in the burials register as 70 years source : David Packham).

  2. GRACE BONIFACE was born circa 1819 (source : removal notice) and christened on 30th March 1819 at Independent nc, Heathfield, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C042191 Dates:1775 - 1837 Source Call No.:1825420 Type:Film Printout Call No.: 0933405 Type: Film Sheet: 00 ). She married JAMES LANGRIDGE on 2nd November 1839 in Hartfield, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.:M148282 Dates:1754 - 1881 Source Call No.: 1067265 Type: Film Printout Call No.:NONE ) . He was born circa 1818 in Hartfield, Sussex (source : 1881 census).

    On the 1881 census, Grace (wife, 63), her husband JAMES (63, blacksmith), their three unmarried sons GEORGE LANGRIDGE (40, blacksmith, born Hartfield), FREDERICK LANGRIDGE (18, blacksmith, born Hartfield), ALBERT LANGRIDGE (14, blacksmith, born Hartfield), their granddaughter GRACE LANGRIDGE (8, scholar, born Hartfield) and an apprentice BENJAMIN DIOLL (20, blacksmith's apprentice, born East Grinstead Sussex) were all at Orchard Cottage in Hartfield, Sussex. Judging by the age gap and the presence of a granddaughter, it would appear that there were other, probably married, children too.

  3. ARTHUR BONIFACE was born circa 1822 (source : removal notice) or 1824 in Hellingly (source : 1881 census) or 1827 (source : wedding entry). The IGI gives his birth date as 24th August 1821 and his baptism as 14th October 1821 at Independent nc, Heathfield, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C042191 Dates:1775 - 1837 Source Call No.:1825420 Type:Film Printout Call No.: 0933405 Type: Film Sheet: 00 ). He married HARRIETT HAFFENDEN , who was ten years younger than him (at least), on 24th February 1857 in Hellingly, Sussex, when he was 30 and she was 20 (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 94, entry 187 and IGI ). She was born circa 1837 (source : wedding info on IGI) or 1839 (source : 1881 census) in Hellingly, and her father was PHILEMON HAFFENDEN, a labourer (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 94, entry 187 and IGI). At the time of the wedding, Arthur was a bachelor and a labourer, of Hellingly and Harriet was a spinster, also of Hellingly (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 94, entry 187). Benjamin made his X mark, but Harriet signed as Harriet Haffenden (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 94, entry 187). The witnesses were James Bourne and Ruth Haffenden, who both signed, and they were married by John Olive, Vicar (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 94, entry 187).

    On the 1881 census, Arthur (57, farmer of 57 acres), his wife HARRIET (42, Born Hellingly), four children (his children? - classed as "other" on the census) LAURA BONIFACE (10, scholar, born Hellingly), ALICE M BONIFACE (8, scholar, born Hellingly),KATE BONIFACE (6, scholar, born Hellingly) and ALBERT A BONIFACE (3, born Hellingly), plus a boarder EVAN TAYLOR (21, brickmaker, born East Grinstead) were all at Hawks Road, Hellingly, Sussex.

  4. MARTHA BOURNE was born on 8th November 1825 and baptised on 15th July 1857, the same date as her brother, in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). There is also a baptism entry at Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel for Martha Boorn on 8th November 1825 (source : David Packham). She married NELSON KENWARD , son of Robert Kenward, a farmer, by licence on 20th June 1845 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 37, entry 74). He was a bachelor, a miller and of full age, whereas Martha was described as a minor, and a spinster of Hellingly (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 37, entry 74). Witnesses at the marriage were George Goldsmith and George Sinnock, who both signed, and they were married by John Olive, Vicar (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 37, entry 74).

  5. JAMES BOURNE was born on 14th April 1828 in Chiddingly, Sussex, and baptised on 15th July 1857, the same date as his sister, in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). There is also a baptism entry at Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel for James Boorn on 15th May 1828 (source : David Packham). On the 1891, James, a 63-year-old unmarried ostler (place of birth given as Hellingly, Sussex), is a servant at Market House, Hailsham, Sussex at the home of JAMES HOLMWOOD, publican.
