On the 1871 census, Jesse (41, pork butcher and ?er), his wife Annie (42, pork butcher's wife), their five
children and a servant HENRY M CRUTTENDEN (15) are all at 43 Norman Road West, Hastings, Sussex.
On the 1881 census, Jesse is a 51-year-old butcher, employing 5 men and 2 boys, and farming 60 acres. He is with
his wife, 52-year-old Ann, two of his sons, two servants and their children (lodgers) at Hemingfold House in
Battle, Sussex. He presumably kept his own pigs on the farm in Battle. Kelly's 1890 directory for Sussex
lists Jesse Offen, pork butcher, at 36 Norman Road, Hastings, and Jesse Offen, farmer, at Crowhurst, Battle SO.
On the 1891 census, Jesse,
a 61-year-old farmer/pork butcher (employer), is at Little Hemmingford, Hastings Rd, Battle, Sussex (presumably the
same dwelling as in 1881), with his wife Ann (62) and a servant, William Peddie (domestic gardener, 33).
Kelly's 1899 directory for Sussex still lists Jesse Offen, pork butcher, at 36 Norman Road, Hastings.
On the 1901 census, Jesse,
a 71-year-old pork butcher, his wife Ann (72) and daughter Ellen are all in St Mary Magdalen, Hastings, Sussex
