MABEL EDITH BOURNE SANDS was born, several
years before her parents’ marriage, on 13th July 1906 in Hastings (All Saints)
(source : short birth certificate). Her birth was registered a month and a half later on
20th August 1906 (source : short birth certificate) in September quarter 1906 (source : Free BMD, district
Hastings, volume 2b, page 25). Both of her parents
died within a few months of each other in 1918, when she was 12.
In 1921, aged 15, she was living at 22 Hardwicke Road (source : family letters).
She married HERBERT VICTOR PRIVETT on 3rd
January 1932 in Hastings (source : wedding certificate). He was a bachelor, aged 32, a
linesman for the GPO, living at 7 West Street; she was a spinster, age 25, living at 17
Hardwicke Road. Both fathers were deceased – BENJAMIN JOHN PRIVETT, a goldsmith
and WALTER JOHN BOURNE, a baker (source : wedding certificate – there is no mention
elsewhere of WALTER JOHN BOURNE being a baker. I think she got confused
with her grandfather, WALTER ALBERT BOURNE, since her father died when she was 12.)
HERBERT VICTOR PRIVETT was born on 25th July 1899 at 6 Clarence Road in Leytonstone, London
(registration district Westham, sub-district Leyton, county Essex)
(source : birth certificate). His parents were Benjamin Alfred PRIVETT,
a walking stick mounter, and Isabel Privett nee McNay (source : birth certificate).
His birth was registered five weeks later on 1st September 1899 by his mother,
who gave her address as 6 Clarence Road,
so he was obviously born at home (source : birth certificate).
He died, aged 51, on 30th June 1951 at home at 90 Southend Road in East Ham, London
(source : death certificate).
The cause of death is given as “coronary thrombosis, certified by Gavin Hurston,
Assistant Deputy Coroner for the Metropolitan District of Essex, after post mortem
without inquest”. The death was registered a few days later by “M.E. Privett, widow
of the deceased, who was present at the death, 90 Southend Road, East Ham” on
3rd July 1951 (source : death certificate). His occupation was given as general
labourer (source : death certificate).
In 1935, she was/they were living at 1 Manor Road Steps, under Burton’s, Hastings; in 1937, she was/they were living at 3 Ratcliff Road, Forest Gate, London E7 ; between 1947 – 1969 (at least) they were living at 90 Southend Road, East Ham, London E6 (as per family letters). They had no children.
