The OFFEN Family

There is a marriage listed for RICHARD OFFEN of Catsfield, Sussex, to ELIZABETH JEMPSON in 1718, which is presumably Richard's first marriage (source : Sussex Marriage Index, courtesy of Helen Bultitude). The marriage was on 1st November 1718 in Battle, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone). Elizabeth must have died before 1731, when Richard remarried.

RICHARD OFFIN remarried ELIZABETH GRAYLING in 1731 in Battle, Sussex (source : Collette Kendall). This was his second marriage. The marriage was on 16th October 1731 in Catsfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone).

In 1738, there is a reference to WILLIAM LAVENDER having a seven-year apprenticeship to RICHARD OFFEN, wheelwright of Westfield, Sussex (source : Helen Bultitude).

In 1747, he had to pay 2 shillings for the East Sussex Window and House Tax Assessments for his house in Westfield with 9 lights (source : http://www.sussexrecordsociety.org/bookwt.asp?bookid=wtax044&xid=O&xnm=1&an=&ap=).

Richard died in 1750 (source : Collette Kendall). He was buried on 17th March (1750?) in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone).

The Children of RICHARD OFFIN and ELIZABETH JEMPSON:

  2. ELIZABETH OFFIN was baptised on 9th February 1721/22 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone).

  3. ANNE OFFIN was baptised on 14th April 1723 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone). She was buried on 19th December 1736 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone).

  4. GRACE OFFIN was baptised on 6th February 1726/7 (source : Christine Waterstone). She married JOHN GUTSHELL in 1750 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone). She died in 1799 (source : Christine Waterstone).

The Children of RICHARD OFFIN and ELIZABETH GRAYLING:

  5. RICHARD OFFEN was baptised on 9th January 1732/33 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone).

  6. ELIZABETH OFFIN was baptised on 13th March 1734 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Christine Waterstone). She had two illegitimate daughters : BETTY OFFIN (baptised on 16th October 1757 in Guestling, Sussex, and was buried on 16th January 1764 in Westfield, Sussex - source : Christine Waterstone) and GRACE OFFIN (baptised on 19th April 1761 in All Saints, Hastings, Sussex, mother ELIZABETH OFFIN, no father - source BVRI 2nd edition). She may be the ELIZABETH OFFEN who married THOMAS PHILLIPS on 2nd October 1767 in St Clement's Church, Hastings, Susex (source : BVRI 2nd edition).

  7. HENRY OFFIN was baptised in 1735 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Collette Kendall).

  8. WILLIAM OFFIN was baptised in 1737 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Collette Kendall). Since his father was a wheelwright, it would seem logical that he is the William Offen of Westfield, wheelwright, bound by a bastardy bond on 1st October 1768 (source : A2A website, ref. PAR504/34/4/2 Overseers of the Poor: bastardy). He married ELIZABETH HOWARD in 1770 in Westfield. They had two children : ELIZABETH OFFIN (baptised in 1770 in Westfield) and ROBERT OFFIN (baptised in 1773 in Westfield and died in the same year in Westfield) (source : Collette Kendall).

  9. JOHN OFFEN was baptised in 1740 in Westfield, Sussex (source : Collette Kendall).
