The BOURNE Family

He married JANE LAMBERT by banns on 12th May 1844 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 35, entry 70). Witnesses at the marriage were Henry Bishop and George Sinnock, and they were married by John Olive, Vicar (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 35, entry 70). Jane, daughter of William Lambert, Labourer, was born circa 1819 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). At the time of the wedding, Jane was of full age and a spinster of Hellingly; Robert was of full age, a bachelor and labourer, also of Hellingly (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 35, entry 70). They were both illiterate, since both made their X marks (source : Hellingly, Marriages, PAR 375/1/3/2, page 35, entry 70).

They lived at Starnash on Coldharbour Road (source : David Packham). In 1855, Robert appears in the parish register as a Parish Clerk (source : David Packham). They were at Lee Bridge in 1871 (source : David Packham).

Robert was buried on 1st January 1876 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). His age in the burial register was 55 years (source : David Packham).

On the 1881 census, Jane, a 60-year-old ag lab widow, her two sons John and George and her daughter-in-law Margaret are all listed at Lee Bridge in Hellingly, Sussex. On the 1891 census, Jane (70, widow) is with her son George at Vicarage Lane, Hellingly, Sussex. There is a death listed for a 71-year-old JANE BOURNE in March quarter 1892, which is presumably her (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 98 ).

On the 1881 census, Phebe, an unmarried 36-year-old Cook And Housekeeper, is listed as head (servant) at Church Street in Willingdon, Sussex, along with JOSEPHINE BLANE (servant, unmarried, 19, born Homerton, Middlesex, general servant) and HARRIETT SLADE (servant, unmarried, 20, born Calne, Wiltshire, House And Parlour Maid ). On the 1891 census, 46-year-old Phoebe is an unmarried domestic cook (servant) at the PARSONS' home at St. Johns Rd. Penlee, Eastbourne, Sussex.

  2. MARY BOURNE was born circa 1846 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : 1881 census). There is a birth listed for MARY BOURNE in September quarter 1843, which may be her (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 7, page 331). She was baptised, to parents ROBERT BOURNE and JANE, on 3rd May 1846 in The Dicker (Upper Dicker), Hellingly, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C148371 Dates: 1844 - 1882 Source Call No.: 1067294 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00). On 11th August 1867, in Upper Dicker, Hellingly, Sussex, she married JAMES BURGESS ( born circa 1839, occupation Labourer) (source : David Packham and IGI, Batch No.: M148371 Dates: 1856 - 1881 Source Call No.: 1067294 Type: Film Printout Call No.: 6901004 Type: Film Sheet: 00 ). The witnesses at the marriage were Amos Bourne & Jane Anne Bourne and no details of James' father were given on the marriage certificate (source : David Packham). On the 1881 census, Mary (35, Ag Laborers Wife ), her husband James (42, born Hellingly Sussex, ag labourer) and their three children, GEORGE BURGESS (11, born Hellingly Sussex, farm servant), AMY BURGESS (8, born Hellingly Sussex, scholar) and WILLIAM BURGESS (5, born Hellingly Sussex, scholar) are all listed at The Mount, Hellingly, Sussex.

  3. OWEN BOURNE was born in September quarter 1848 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 7, page 381 ). He was baptised, to parents ROBERT BOURNE and JANE, on 3rd September 1848 in The Dicker (Upper Dicker), Hellingly, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C148371 Dates: 1844 - 1882 Source Call No.: 1067294 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00). He may have died or emigrated before 1881, since he does not show up on the 1881 census.

Margaret was 18 and the daughter of SAMUEL RIPLEY, John was 29 and the son of ROBERT BOURNE (source : IGI, Batch No.: M025283 Dates: 1837 - 1881 Source Call No.: 1067204 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00 ). This marriage is registered in March quarter 1881, and John's name is recorded as JOHN EMERIE BOURNE (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 121). On the 1881 census, John, a 29-year-old ag lab, his (brand-new) wife Margaret (18, born Hellingly Sussex), his brother George and mother are all listed at Lee Bridge in Hellingly, Sussex. John and Margaret had a son, ROBERT JESSES (sic) BOURNE , who was baptised, to parents JOHN EMRICE BOURNE and MARGARET, on 3rd April 1892 in Newhaven, Sussex (source : BVRI 2nd edition). There is also a christening for PERCIVAL JOHN BOURNE , who was baptised, to parents JOHN BOURNE and MARGARET, on 12th January 189o in Newhaven, Sussex (source : BVRI 2nd edition).

  5. GEORGE BOURNE was born circa 1855 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). He was baptised, to parents ROBERT BOURNE and JANE, on 21st October 1855 in The Dicker (Upper Dicker), Hellingly, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C148371 Dates: 1844 - 1882 Source Call No.: 1067294 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00). On the 1881 census, George, a 26-year-old unmarried ag lab, his mother, his recently-married brother George and his new wife Margaret are all listed at Lee Bridge in Hellingly, Sussex. On the 1891 census, George (unmarried, 34, Agricultural Labourer (Em'ee) ) is with his elderly mother at Vicarage Lane, Hellingly, Sussex.

  6. SARAH SELINA BOURNE was born in September quarter 1859 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 62 ).
