The BOURNE Family


WALTER BOURNE was born circa 1817 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : 1881 census). He was baptised on 1st March 1818 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). He was an "ag lab" (in 1861 a farmer) (source : David Packham).

He married ELIZA CONEY by banns on 20th October 1839 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : PAR 375/1/3/2, page 12, entry 24). (The IGI wrongly gives her name as ELIZA PIPER.) Witnesses at the marriage were George Sinnock and William Boniface and they were married by John Olive, Vicar (source : PAR 375/1/3/2, page 12, entry 24). Eliza, daughter of William Coney, Labourer, was born circa 1822 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham and 1881 census). At the time of the wedding, Walter Bourne was of full age, a Bachelor, Labourer, of Hellingly, son of William Bourne, Labourer, and Eliza Coney was a Minor, Spinster, -, of Hellingly, daughter of William Coney, Labourer (source : PAR 375/1/3/2, page 12, entry 24). They both made their X marks (source : PAR 375/1/3/2, page 12, entry 24).

They were at Starnash in the 1841 census (source : David Packham). In 1861 they were at Caldicott's Wood and Walter was a "farmer of 20 acres" (source : David Packham). They were at Coligates in 1871 with an unidentified grandson (source : David Packham). On the 1881 census, Walter (age 65, a farmer of 23 acres), Eliza (58, farmer's wife) and three of their sons were at Chiddingly, Sussex.

Eliza died between 1881 and 1891 (source : censuses). On the 1891 census, Walter (listed as Wallter), a 76-year-old widowed milkman (employee), is with his widowed son JOB and a widowed daughter-in-law ESTHER and two grandchildren (the family of his deceased son Carlton) at Beard's Farm, Chiddingly, Sussex. On the 1901 census, 85-year-old Walter is a stockman on a farm in Chiddingly, Sussex, with his son JOB (and family? household needs checking - taken from index).

She was listed as age 27, daughter of WALTER BOURNE, and his age was given as 26 (source : IGI, Batch No.: M025283 Dates: 1837 - 1881 Source Call No.: 1067204 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00 ). He was born circa 1845 in Eastbourne, Sussex (source : 1881 census). On the 1881 census, Ruth (wife, 38), her husband Samuel (head, 36, plasterer), and their three daughters, ANNIE CRUNDEN (6, scholar, born Eastbourne Sussex), MINNIE CRUNDEN (4, scholar, born Eastbourne Sussex), and KATIE CRUNDEN (1, born Eastbourne Sussex), are listed at Grove Road Cottage, Eastbourne, Sussex, along with Samuel's parents (?) SAMUEL CRUNDEN (also head, 83, No Occupation Recieving Parish Pay, born Eastbourne Sussex) and SUSSAN (sic) CRUNDEN (wife, 74, born Buxted Sussex) and a grandson THOMAS CRUNDEN (11, scholar, born Eastbourne Sussex).

  2. NELSON BOURNE was baptised on 1st March 1846 in Upper Dicker, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.:C148371 Dates:1844 - 1882 Source Call No.: 1067294 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00 ). He was buried on 8th December 1849 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham).

  3. JASON BOURNE was born circa 1848 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). His birth was registered in March quarter 1849 (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 7, page 421). He may have died before 1881 since he does not appear on the 1881 census.

  4. AMOS BOURNE was born circa 1852 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). He may have died before 1881 since he does not appear on the 1881 census.

  5. ALEXANDER BOURNE was born circa 1854 in Hellingly or Isfield, Sussex (source : David Packham). His occupation was ag lab (source : David Packham). The only possible on the 1881 census is "ALICK BOURNE" (age 26, born Ifield, Sussex) who was a boarder at Boship Cottage, Hellingly, Sussex, with William BONIFACE and family. On the 1891 census, this ALEXANDER BOURNE is listed as a nephew (Single, 36, Potter (Em'ee), born Sussex - Isfield ) at 9 Zoar Terrace, Hailsham, Sussex with the same family : William and Harriett BONIFACE. The only possible on the 1901 census is an Alexander Bourne in Jevington, Sussex (age 42, blacksmith striker, born Isfield Sussex) (source : index, household still needs to be checked).

  6. JOB BOURNE was born circa 1857 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : 1881 and 1891 censuses). His occupation was spinner in a rope factory (source : David Packham). On the 1881 census, age 24, unmarried and serving in the Army Reserves, he was listed at home with his parents in Chiddingly, Sussex. In December quarter 1883, he married (ANNIE BOURNE?) (source : Free BMD, district Eastbourne, volume 2b, page 147 ). His wife died before 1891 because on the 1891 census, he shows up (listed as Joab) as a widowed 33-year-old farmer (employer) with his father and the family of his dead brother Carlton at Beard's Farm, Chiddingly, Sussex. On the 1901 census, 43-year-old Job is a farmer in Chiddingly, Sussex, with his 85-year-old father and the family of his dead brother Carlton (source : index, household still needs to be checked).

  7. CARLTON BOURNE was born in June quarter 1859 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : 1881 census and Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 59 ). On the 1881 census, age 22, unmarried and an agricultural labourer, he was listed at home with his parents in Chiddingly, Sussex. In December quarter 1881, he married ESTHER MARIA ATKIN (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 194 ). He died, aged 29, in June quarter 1890 (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 63 ). On the 1891 census, his widow ESTHER (30, general servant, born Sussex - Ashburnham) and (presumably) their two children BESSIE BOURNE (9, Scholar, born Sussex - Chiddingly ) and AMOS BOURNE (3, born Sussex - Heathfield ) are at Beard's Farm, Chiddingly, Sussex with Carlton's father and widowed brother Job. On the 1901 census, 40-year-old ESTHER BOURNE (born Ashburnham Sussex, domestic housekeeper) and 19-year-old BESSIE BOURNE (born Chiddingly Sussex, general domestic) are in Chiddingly with Carlton's father and brother Job (source : index, household still needs to be checked).

  8. EDWIN BOURNE was born circa 1860 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). He does not show up on the 1881 census (unless "EWIN" (see below) is EDWIN and not EWAN).

  9. EWAN BOURNE was born circa 1862 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). On the 1881 census, age 20, unmarried and a shepherd, he was listed as a boarder (EWIN BOURNE, born Hillingley (sic) Sussex) at SARAH WILSON's home at The Common, Hadlow , Kent.

  10. HARRY BOURNE was born circa 1864 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). He does not show up on the 1881 census.

  11. SIDNEY CHARLES BOURNE was born circa 1866 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : 1881 and 1891 censuses). On the 1881 census, age 14, unmarried and a postman, he was listed at home with his parents in Chiddingly, Sussex. He married LOIS FIELD in March quarter 1887 (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 2b, page 133). She was born circa 1865 in Rotherfield, Sussex (source : 1901 census). (There is a christening listed for LOIS FIELD, daughter of JOSEPH FIELD and ELIZA, on 25th February 1863 in Hadlow Down, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C152051 Dates: 1836 - 1885 Source Call No.: 1067367 Type: Film Printout Call No.: NONE Type: Sheet: 00). On the 1881 census, aged 18, she was at Howbourne, Buxted, Sussex with her parents JOSEPH FIELD (41, ag lab) and ELIZA FIELD and family. ) On the 1891 census, Sidney, a 25-year-old postman (employee), his wife Lois (29) and two children ESTHER (3) and LIZZIE (1) (listed as ELIZA in the 1901 census) are all at Chiddingly St, Chiddingly, Sussex. On the 1901 census, Sidney shows up in Tarring Neville, Lewes, Sussex (age 36, "...man minder") with wife Lois (38, born Rotherfield Sussex), and children ESTHER BOURNE (14, born Chiddingly Sussex), ELIZA BOURNE (11, scholar, born Chiddingly Sussex), RUTH BOURNE (7, scholar, born Chiddingly Sussex), JOSEPH BOURNE (4, born Chiddingly Sussex),and ANNIE BOURNE (2, born Horton Kirby Kent) (source : index, household still needs to be checked).
