The BOURNE Family

WILLIAM HENRY BOURNE was born circa 1856 in Selmeston, Sussex (source : 1871, 1881 and 1901 censuses - the 1891 census says Hellingly). He was christened, to parents HENRY BOURNE and CHARLOTTE, on 22nd April 1856 in Selmeston, Sussex (source : BVRI 2nd edition). On the 1871 census, he was living with his mother and brothers in Arlington and was a 15-year-old labourer.

He married MARY CATT on 2nd July 1880 in St. Leonards Church in St. Leonards, Sussex (source : PAR 469/1/3/4, page 42, entry 83). This marriage was registered in September quarter 1880 (source : Free BMD, district Hastings, volume 2b, page 53). Mary was born circa 1856 in Hurstmonceux, Sussex (source : 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses). She could be the sister of ELIZABETH CATT, who married William's brother JOHN ROBERT BOURNE in March quarter 1888. At the time of the wedding, William Henry Bourne, 24, was a Bachelor, Cellar Man, of 33 Gensing Road, Hastings (this was the home of JOHN DE GRUCHY, where William's brother WALTER ALBERT BOURNE was living/working in the 1881 census), son of HENRY BOURNE (deceased), Bootmaker, and Mary Catt, 24, was a Spinster, Servant, of 22 Gensing Road (just along the road from her husband-to-be), daughter of JESSE [blank], Porter (source : PAR 469/1/3/4, page 42, entry 83). They both signed their names (source : PAR 469/1/3/4, page 42, entry 83). Witnesses were Frederick Thomas Bourne and Annie Pearson, who both signed their names, and the couple were married by Geo G Gardiner, Rector (source : PAR 469/1/3/4, page 42, entry 83).

On the 1881 census, WILLIAM HENRY BOURNE, a 25-year-old cellarman, is living at 3 Sparkes New Cottages, Hastings St Leonards, Sussex, with his wife MARY BOURNE and their 7-month-old baby son WILLIAM H BOURNE. The birth of WILLIAM HENRY BOURNE is registered in December quarter 1880, the quarter following their marriage, so it seems that Mary was already pregnant at the time of the wedding (source : Free BMD, district Hastings, volume 2b, page 31).

On the 1891 census, William (listed as Henry Wm Bourne), a36-year-old baker, his wife Mary (36) and three children were all at 12 North Terrace, Ore, Sussex. On the 1901 census, William is a 45-year-old decorator (employer), and he is at 76 St George's Road, Hastings, Sussex with his wife Mary (45) and family .
