The TODMAN Family

WILLIAM FREDERICK TODMAN was born on 17th March 1855 in Croydon, Surrey (source : Rosemary).

On the 1861 census, he was a 6-year-old scholar, living with his parents and siblings at 11 Tamworth Road, Croydon, Surrey. On the 1871 census, he was a 16-year-old groom, living with his widowed mother and siblings at 11 Tamworth Place, Croydon, Surrey. (This would suggest that his father was indeed the WILLIAM TODMAN, coach and cart wheelwright, listed in the Croydon 1851 Directory.

William married before 1881 because he shows up on the 1881 census with his wife ELLEN (SPENCER?) . There is a marriage registered in June quarter 1878 in Croydon for a WILLIAM TODMAN, possibly to ELLEN SPENCER (source : Free BMD, district Croydon, volume 2a, page 336).

On the 1881 census, he was a house decorator, living at 10 Gloucester Road, Croydon, Surrey, with his wife ELLEN and their son, FREDERICK WILLIAM TODMAN. ELLEN was born circa 1848 in Cavendish, Suffolk (source : 1881 census), and died, aged 35, in June quarter 1883 in Croydon, Surrey (Free BMD – district Croydon volume 2a page 158). In the same quarter, there is a death for 1 year old WILLIAM GEORGE TODMAN (Free BMD – district Croydon volume 2a, page 135), which leads me to believe she died during or as a result of childbirth.

William remarried SUSAN (LOUISA ?) LILLY before the 1891 census and probably before 1887, judging by the ages of their children. She was born in Prittwell, Essex circa 1867 (source : 1891 census) or 1864 (source : 1901 census).

On the 1891 census, William (head, 35, house decorator, employer, born Croydon), his wife SUSAN (24, born Prittwell Essex), son FREDERICK (12, born Croydon) and two daughters LILY (3, born Croydon) and ALICE (7 months, born Croydon) are all at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. The house stood next to "two house spaces, now used as garden plots" (source : 1891 census).

On the 1901 census, WILLIAM TODMAN, a 46-year-old house painter and decorator, and his wife (listed as Louisa so maybe this was her middle name ?) were living at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey, with their seven children (source : 1901 census).

William died on 26th June 1927 (source : Rosemary). Susan died on 10th August 1934 (source : Rosemary).

The Children of WILLIAM TODMAN and ELLEN:

1. FREDERICK WILLIAM TODMAN was born on 28th January 1879 in Croydon, Surrey (source : Rosemary). His birth was registered in March quarter 1879 in Croydon, Surrey (source : Free BMD – district Croydon, volume 2a, page 208). On the 1881 census, age 2, he was living with his parents at 10 Gloucester Road, Croydon. Two years later, when he was four, his mother died. On the 1891 census, aged 12, he was listed with his family at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. On the 1901 census, he was a 22-year-old unmarried machinist (sawmill), living with his father, stepmother and half-brothers and sisters at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. He died on 26th June 1927 (source : Rosemary).
   
   
2. WILLIAM GEORGE TODMAN (not definitely theirs), died aged 1 in June quarter 1883 in Croydon, Surrey (Free BMD – district Croydon volume 2a page 158). As this is the same quarter as the death of his mother (if I am right), he may have died during or shortly after his birth, possibly because his mother was too unwell to nurse him.

3. LILLY ELIZABETH TODMAN was born on 17th November 1887 in Croydon, Surrey (source : 1901 census and Rosemary). On the 1891 census, aged 3, she was listed with her family at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. On the 1901 census, aged 13, she is living with her parents at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. She died on the 27th October 1960 (source : Rosemary).
   
   
4. ALICE M TODMAN was born on 13th June 1891 in Croydon, Surrey (source : Rosemary). There is a birth registered in March quarter 1891, which may be her (source : Ancestry England and Wales, Civil Registration Index , county Surrey Sussex, volume 2b, page 156). On the 1891 census, aged 7 months, she was listed with her family at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. On the 1901 census, aged 10, she is living with her parents at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. She died on 28th November 1917 (source : Rosemary).
   
   
5. HILDA MAY TODMAN was born circa on 18th March 1892 in Croydon, Surrey (source : Rosemary) . Her birth was registered in June quarter 1892 (source : Free BMD - district Croydon, volume 2a, page 229).
   
   
6. GRACE MILDRED TODMAN was born on 15th January 1894 (source : Rosemary). Her birth was registered in March quarter 1894, in Croydon, Surrey (source : Free BMD – district Croydon, volume 2a, page 256). On the 1901 census, aged 7, she is living with her parents at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey. She died in September 1925 (source : Rosemary).
   
   
7. SUSAN BEATRICE TODMAN was born on 14th October 1895 (source : Rosemary). Her birth was registered in December quarter 1895, in Croydon, Surrey (source : Free BMD for SUSIE BEATRICE TODMAN – district Croydon, volume 2a, page 242). On the 1901 census, aged 5, she is living with her parents at 21 Gladstone Road, Croydon, Surrey.
   
   
8. ELSIE FLORENCE TODMAN was born on 15th June 1899 (source : Rosemary). She died on 9th May 1984 (source : Rosemary). Is she the same child as ELLEN, listed below ???
